Strawberries, Blueberries, and Mud!

Messy Fun!

What a fantastic week, I was so proud of all of your children this week. Everyone was so brave and had a fun time making new friends at school. It was nice to have all of our students in attendance and to begin establishing our school routine.

I am still waiting for the green light from the office staff before I can begin posting pictures on the blog. Hopefully by the end of next week all of the FOIP forms will be sorted out and I can share the cuteness overload that has been happening in here!

This week was all about our good friend Pete the cat! We read two different Pete books and engaged in some fun Pete themed adventures.

Pete's School Tour

After reading about Pete discovering his new school in Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes by Eric Litwin, we enjoyed a school scavenger hunt of our school where we challenged our students to find the places within our school that will be familiar to us this year: the library, the office, and the gym.

We also spent time reading Eric Litwin's book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes. In this story Pete steps in strawberries, blueberries, mud, and water! This motivated us to explore with these materials at school as well. 

Pete's Pizzas

We used strawberries, blueberries, and mud to build our very own Pete Pizzas! Okay, maybe we switched out the mud for Nutella, but this was a delicious activity none-the-less! Check out our recipe:

Pete's Sensory Walk

You might have noticed some dirty toes coming home last week - sorry about that! We re-enacted Pete's story by stepping in strawberries, blueberries, mud, and water ourselves! This was the ultimate sensory experience. Some of your children absolutely loved it, some were NOT going to go in! I can't wait to share the rest of the pictures from this messy activity.

Welcome Mrs. Kaluza!

We are thrilled to announce that Mrs. Kristen Kaluza will be joining our morning class. Mrs. Kaluza will be team teaching with Mrs. Porter in the mornings. This will likely begin the week of September 30th. 

Pre-Kindergarten Pick Up

In Pre-K we often end our day at the park. I have created signs to hang on the front door of the school that will help parents know where to find us at pick up time. The signs will designate which park we are at and have an arrow to point you in the right direction. Please try to get in the habit of checking the front doors for a sign when you are picking up your child. If there is no sign, that means we are inside and will come upstairs at home time like usual.  

Picture Day!

Picture day is coming up! The photographer will be here on Wednesday, September 25th and Thursday, September 26th to take everyone's pictures. 

• The PUF and M/M funded students will have their pictures taken on Wednesday
• The Monday/Wednesday students will have their pictures taken on Wednesday
• The Tuesday/Thursday students will have their pictures taken on Thursday

Welcome to Pre-Kindergarten!

We had a wonderful first week with our funded students. We spent the week working on the routine of school and we are looking forward to the rest of our students joining us next week! 

Our week was fairly relaxed with a lot of time devoted to playing, exploring the classroom, and getting to know each other. Visiting the gym and playing in the ball pit were two highlights for our students this week.

Our theme to start off the school year is Pete the Cat. If you are unfamiliar with this cool cat, I strongly recommend all of this books! This week we focused on the book Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes by Eric Litwin.

After reading Pete's story we chose our favorite shoe from the book and had fun painting Pete's shoes either red, blue, or brown.

Park Play

A Message From the Robina Baker Office

Hello Robina Families,

We hope you have a great summer!

Shortly before school starts (late August) you will receive an email from your child’s new teacher letting you know what to expect in September in their classroom.

We will have a Meet the Staff BBQ Event for all of our families on Thursday, August 29 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm.

The first day of school for Grade 1-4 students is September 3, 2019.

That's a Wrap

It's hard to believe our school year of pre-kindergarten has come to an end. We will miss all of our kiddos that are moving on to kindergarten, good luck on your new adventure! 

Ocean Adventures

We strengthened our oral motor skills on Monday by making oceans. We blew bubbles in water, blue paint, and dish soap to make a soapy blue ocean! This simple yet messy craft is so fun and can easily be re-done at home this summer.

On Tuesday we added a starfish to our ocean scene. The students enjoyed this tasty craft that involved gluing Cheerio 'suckers' onto our fish.

Boats, Boats, Boats!

We built boats out of pool noodles on Wednesday. The students had fun test driving them in the water table afterwards.

The Waves in the Sea

We had fun singing this little song at school this week.

National Indigenous People's Day

In honor of National Indigenous People's Day we welcomed a guest reader, Mrs. Houle, to share a traditional story with us.

Devon Rocks!

We worked hard this week carefully preparing beautiful rocks to be hid around town. The students had fun painting them. Look for them hiding around town!

Party Day

Our last day was jam packed with all sorts of party fun. Even though the weather was gloomy, we managed to have a great time inside.

We want to wish all of our pre-kindergarten families a safe and happy summer. Thank you for sharing your children with us this school year. They brought joy, laughter, and fun to our lives every day. We enjoyed learning and growing with them this year. We wish them all the best next year, wherever they may be.

We're Going to the Zoo!

We had a fun time at the Edmonton Valley Zoo! Thank you to all of our PK families for taking the time to drive your children to the zoo. A special thanks to the parents who stayed at the zoo and toured with us.

We're Going On a Zoo Hunt

We prepared for finding animals at the zoo by making binoculars and hunting for animals around the school!

Willoughby Wallaby Woo

Students enjoyed singing this silly name game song this week. Phonemic Awareness (such as rhyming, paying attention to beginning sounds, and phoneme substitution) is an important pre-reading skill. This is a fun way to practice all three of those skills. Try singing it at home with the names of your family members!

Building With Poddley

We had fun using the Poddley building set this week. The students loved making houses with windows, doors, and even a roof!

Coming Up

Wow, it's hard to believe next week will be our LAST week of pre-kindergarten. We will dive deep into our Ocean theme next week.

Zoo Week!

It was literally a zoo in Pre-K this week! We started with a zoo animal song and by the end of the week had transformed into lions!

Other zoo fun included a mini animal scavenger hunt, making zoo enclosures, and a sneak peak at animals at the Valley zoo. We are so excited about our fieldtrip next week!

Going on a Lion Hunt!

Pre-K's painted and glued, developed fine motor skills, and ended up with their own amazing Lion's mane to wear on our safari adventure. We took turns being hunters and lions as we sang and acted out this song. (Hint: We changed the ending a bit! Ask your child what happened when the hunters found the lions. )

Lion Paintings

We were animal artists this week. Students used a cool painting technique to make the lion's mane by using a fork. They further built their fine motor skills by gluing on eyes and drawing the nose, mouth, and whisker marks.
