PK Olympics!

Last week we got into the Canada spirit with PK Olympic week!  We enjoyed watching clips of the opening ceremonies and different sport events throughout the week.

Olympics in the Gym

In the gym we enjoyed trying out different Olympic sports.  The students had fun speed skating, curling, bobsledding, playing hockey, and doing the torch run.

Olympic Art

We strengthened our fine motor skills this week by stamping the Olympic rings.

The students were also thrilled to each make their own Olympic torch.  We then used our torches for an Olympic parade as well as torch relay races.

We worked as a team to build an Olympic Cauldron for our classroom Olympics as well.

Playing Olympics

During center time this week we set up a mini luge track, played hockey on a mini rink, and also enjoyed the marble skeleton run.

Olympic Song

The students loved singing this silly little movement song this week.  Here are the words in case you want to sing it at home as well:

The Walking Song
(To the tune of Frere Jacques)
Walking, walking,
walking, walking.
Hop, hop, hop!
Hop, hop, hop!
Running, running, running,
running, running, running.
Now we stop.
Now we stop!

Games FOP

Thank you to all of the families who came out to our games FOP this Friday.  Games are a wonderful way to interact with your child and help them develop.  It was lovely to see our students out having a fun time with their parents and peers!

Mess Mess Mess!

We had lots of sensory fun this week.  The week was short, but we managed to pack in a whole lot of fun!

The Food Game

On Tuesday we played a food game.  The food game is a food exploration activity that encourages students to touch, tolerate, and even taste new foods!  This week our food game was with melons.  First we talked about the melons, then each student made a melon-kabob.  Before trying the melons we played the food game which involved doing silly things such as smelling, poking, and putting the food on our hands.  We will continue to play the food game throughout the year to expose students to different types of food.

Clean Mud

We had fun making clean mud this week.  Clean mud is a slimy mixture made from shaved Ivory soap, water, and toilet paper.  When it is all mixed together it makes for a very interesting sensory bin!

Games Day

Wednesday was games day.  This week we played Honey Bee Tree, Pig Goes Pop, and Pop Up Pirate.  Games are a wonderful way to help your children develop social, language, and motor skills.

Shave Cream Painting

We got messy painting with shave cream this week.  The students are pretty proud of their final project which will be used to hold our Valentine cards next week.

Winter Walk

It was pretty cold this week, and with early dismissal day we did not have enough time to go on a winter walk on Wednesday.  Instead we took a little walk around our school.  We took finger puppets with us to "show them" our school.

Zooooming into another week!

This week we had a short week with school on Monday and Tuesday and our field trip on Thursday! We wrapped up our transportation unit by doing "hot air balloon" yoga, being active with the parachute in the gym and creating personalized hot air balloon art!

Painting hot air balloons!

Using our Galaxy bottle to calm our minds and bodies

Getting Messy is Fun!

4Cats Arts Studio in Summerside graciously hosted our Prekindergarten classes and it was a HUGE success! Students began by learning about and painting like Jackson Pollock, an abstract expressionist. Students painted the background of their canvas and then chose four "happy" colours to go with it. After the background was painted we headed into the splatter room where the kiddos used paintbrushes to splatter their happy colours on their canvas. They even tried hopping and splatting with the paint brushes never touching the canvas!  After their master piece was complete, PK each made their own spin art as well! Plenty of fun had by all!
